A question that comes up a lot in the fitness industry is, Does muscle weigh more than fat? Majority of people think muscle weighs more than fat, this is a myth. A pound of one item weighs the same as a pound of another item. Five pounds of muscle weighs the same as five pounds of fat. The difference of the two can be seen through volume, muscle is denser than fat, so it occupies less space than fat. When you increase lean muscle tissue mass, you help your body burn more calories because a pound of muscle will burn more fat than a pound of fat. Good point to remember, when decreasing body fat and increasing lean body mass (muscle) the number on the scale might be the same or even go up, but you will look slimmer/toned. Therefore, it is good to gauge your fitness weight on how your clothes fit and how you feel, more energy than just the number on the scale.
